Alexander Skarsgård Bio

Alexander Skarsgrd, a Swedish actor, was born on August 25, 1976. He was born in Stockholm, started acting at age 7, and stopped at age 13. Skarsgrd returned to acting after serving in the Swedish military, landing his first part in the American comedy Zoolander. He performed the role of Marine Brad Colbert in the Generation Kill miniseries in 2008. Skarsgrd’s breakout role in the television series True Blood was that of the vampire Eric Northman. Skarsgrd was born in Stockholm, Sweden on August 25, 1976.

He is the oldest child of doctor My Skarsgrd and actor Stellan Skarsgrd. His parents are estranged. He has two half-brothers from his father’s second marriage to Megan Everett and five younger siblings: Gustaf, Sam, Bill, Eija, and Valter. Gustaf, Bill, and Valter are all actors as well. Skarsgrd started getting offers for parts in cinema, television, and stage plays once he returned to Sweden.  He applied for and was given the character of a dumb model in the 2001 film Zoolander, his first part in an American movie, while on holiday in the country. In 2003, he was nominated for a Guldbagge Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in Hundtricket-the Movie. He received five titles as Sweden’s Sexiest Man. Skarsgrd learned about True Blood’s production just before departing to film Generation Kill.

True Blood is an HBO series based on Charlaine Harris’s Southern Vampire Mysteries novels,[18] which follow the cohabitation of humans and vampires in a Louisiana town. [19] He was originally hesitant to portray a vampire, but after discovering that playwright Alan Ball was behind the film, he submitted an audition video for the part of Bill Compton. [18] Ball’s television show Six Feet Under and movie American Beauty were favourites of Skarsgrd’s. Stephen Moyer was cast in the part, but Alexander Skarsgrd was given the part of Eric Northman, a 1,000-year-old Nordic vampire.  The first time Skarsgrd played the character of Northman was in the fourth episode of the first season. He studied the acting of Max Schreck and Bela Lugosi as well as the movie Nosferatu to help him in his depiction.  He said that he liked characters that weren’t either evil or good, therefore portraying Northman was appealing to him.  From 2008 until 2014, True Blood aired on HBO, to mixed reviews.

Skarsgrd featured in Lars von Trier’s Melancholia, which was released in 2011. In the movie, which had its world debut at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and also starred his father, he played a newlywed opposite Kirsten Dunst, who also played his wife.  In the same year, he played Charlie Venner in Straw Dogs, a remake of the 1971 movie of the same name. Rod Lurie, the remake’s director, changed Cornwall, Mississippi, to be the small town location and referred to Venner as “an ex-football star gone to seed.” The movie, starring James Marsden and Kate Bosworth, was out on September 16, 2011. Skarsgrd played Perry Wright, Celeste’s violent husband, in the drama series Big Little Lies from 2017 to 2019. Nicole Kidman played Celeste.

Due to internal difficulties regarding his fears about requiring his wife, he defined his persona as aggressive.  The television show was praised by everyone.  Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter called Skarsgrd’s performance in the first-season finale “utterly terrifying.”  For the part, Skarsgrd received the 2017 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.  He played a mute bartender in a future civilization in the science fiction movie Mute, which was released in February 2018.

Later that year, in the miniseries The Little Drummer Girl, which depicts political unrest in Europe in 1979, he played a shady character.  It earned favourable reviews. He played a sensitive German architect in the 2019 movie The Aftermath, which is set in 1946-era post-war Hamburg. He played the role of the Canadian prime minister in the romantic comedy Long Shot. Critics praised the movie, with Kristy Puchko of The Guardian praising Skarsgrd for “making a meal out of it” in his supporting part.  After its May 2019 release, it had a poor commercial outcome.

Skarsgrd played the endearing devil Randall Flagg in The Stand, a CBS All Access miniseries based on Stephen King’s 1978 book of the same name. From December 2020 until February 2021, it was in operation. He next appeared in the critically acclaimed and financially successful monster movie Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021.

Skarsgrd appeared often in the comedy-drama series Succession during its third season, for which he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. In the epic movie The Northman, he played the role of Amleth. The movie, which was released in April 2022, received positive reviews, with Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair calling Skarsgrd “a great vessel for the film’s luxurious menace”. Skarsgrd will have a role in the suspenseful film Infinity Pool.

Skarsgrd co-starred with Taylor Kitsch and Rihanna in Peter Berg’s Battleship, a movie that was based on the Hasbro game, in 2012. The movie received poor reviews from reviewers and performed poorly at the box office.  Along with Julianne Moore and Steve Coogan, he starred in the film version of the same-titled Henry James book What Maisie Knew by Scott McGehee and David Siegel.  He also appeared with Paula Patton in the cast of Henry Alex Rubin’s thriller Disconnect.  Skarsgrd appeared in Zal Batmanglij’s 2013 film The East opposite Brit Marling and Elliot Page.

He played a guy who starts an affair with his girlfriend’s young daughter in the movie The Diary of a Teenage Girl.  It became available in August 2015. Skarsgrd acknowledged his delight in playing the part “without justifying or condoning” the character’s conduct. He also said it was purposeful to discover complexity in the predatory element of the character.  In the 2016 movie The Legend of Tarzan, he played the title role alongside Margot Robbie, who played Jane. Skarsgrd trained for the role for seven months.

The movie’s box office performance was unsuccessful. It got conflicting reviews, while Skarsgrd’s performance was praised.  Later that year, he played a deviant police officer in the dark comedy movie War on Everyone. Skarsgrd had an appearance in Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” music video in 2009.

In Tarik Saleh’s 2009 animated feature Metropia, he provided the voice of Stefan.  In the British mockumentary Beyond the Pole, Skarsgrd played Terje, a homosexual Norwegian who was travelling to the North Pole, in 2010.  Skarsgrd was the basis for a new style that suit manufacturer Hickey Freeman unveiled in 2010. The advertising campaign was captured by Annie Leibovitz, and it was published in The Wall Street Journal Magazine, GQ, and Details. Along with Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin, Skarsgrd shared the Rolling Stone cover for the month of September in 2010. In 2004, he relocated to Los Angeles, although he kept his job in Sweden.

He got his big break when he was chosen to play US Marine Brad Colbert in the HBO miniseries Generation Kill. Generation Kill, an adaptation of the same-titled book by journalist Evan Wright, follows the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion of the United States Marine Corps during the first few months of the Iraq War. Although executive producer David Simon was not persuaded he could pull off a credible American accent, director Susanna White wanted to cast him.

Just 36 hours before he had to board a plane for Namibia where the movie was being filmed, Skarsgrd discovered the job was his after four auditions in three cities. Six days a week filming took place there for seven months with the actors and crew. In order to perfect the American accent, Skarsgrd worked with a dialect coach. When Skarsgrd was seven years old, a filmmaker friend of his father offered him his first acting job as Kalle Nubb in the movie Ke and His World.

At the age of 13, he rose to fame in Sweden after playing the lead in the 1989 television production Hunden som log.  He stopped performing at that age because he was uncomfortable with the celebrity. Skarsgrd applied for his national service at the age of 19. For 18 months, he was a member of the Swedish Armed Forces’ SäkJakt  unit, which dealt with terrorism and anti-sabotage in the Stockholm archipelago.

He left Sweden in 1996 after finishing his duty to study in England for six months at Leeds Metropolitan University. He registered to study English, but he confesses that he spent more time having fun than really studying. While there, he debated going into architecture but ultimately decided to become an actor. He relocated to New York City in 1997 and enrolled in a drama course at Marymount Manhattan College. After six months, he returned to Stockholm, but during that time, he had discovered that he wanted to be an actor.
