Alice Maud Krige  is a South African actress and producer who was born on June 28, 1954. Her first major cinema role was as the Gilbert and Sullivan vocalist Sybil Gordon in Chariots of Fire (1981). In Ghost Story (1981), she played both Eva Galli/Alma Mobley and the Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact (1996). Patricia Krige, a professor of psychology, and Louis Krige, a physician, raised Krige in Upington, Cape Province (now Northern Cape), South Africa. The Kriges eventually relocated to Port Elizabeth, where Alice grew up in a “very happy household” with two brothers, one of whom went on to become a physician and the other a Professor of Surgery.  Krige enrolled at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa, with the intention of pursuing a career as a clinical psychologist. After taking an acting class at Rhodes, she went on to get a Bachelor of Arts degree and a BA Hons degree in theatre, all with honours.

Krige made her professional debut on British television in 1979, in the television movie A Tale of Two Cities, portraying Lucie Manette. In 1981, she starred as Sybil Gordon in Chariots of Fire and Eva Galli/Alma Mobley in Ghost Story. After participating in a 1981 West End theatre production of George Bernard Shaw’s Arms and the Man, she won a Plays and Players Award as well as a Laurence Olivier Award for Most Promising Newcomer.

She went on to perform Cordelia in King Lear and Edward Bond’s Lear, Miranda in The Tempest, Bianca in The Taming of the Shrew, and Roxanne in Cyrano de Bergerac with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
