Dana Carvey Bio

Dana Thomas Carvey was born in Missoula, Montana, on June 2, 1955, to William and Billie Carvey, both of whom were teachers. With three older brothers, Scott, Mark, and Brad, and one younger sister, Lori, he is the family’s youngest son. After graduating from San Francisco State University with a degree in communications in 1977, he won the San Francisco stand-up competition.

He married Leah in 1979, but the marriage barely lasted a year. Dana Carvey married Paula Zwagerman in 1983, and the couple has two boys, Dex and Thomas. He was born in Missoula but relocated to California with his family when he was three years old. After graduating from San Francisco State University, he worked as a stand-up comedian in many Bay Area venues before moving to Hollywood to pursue a career in comedy.

After a string of failures in early television roles and cameos in a few films, he joined the cast of ‘Saturday Night Live (SNL)’ in 1986. He appeared in countless episodes of the show throughout the years, earning him acclaim for his impersonations of renowned individuals and a vast range of memorable characters. Following that, he pursued his dream and made his big-screen debut in 1992’s ‘Wayne’s World.’

When he left Saturday Night Live after seven years, he got an Emmy Award the next year. Following his departure, he appeared in a number of films but failed to achieve the same level of success as a stand-up comedian. He has curtailed his appearances on entertainment platforms in recent years, both on television and in films, although he is still recognized for his hugely successful sketches on the Saturday Night Live show.

He moved to Los Angeles in 1981 in the hopes of making a fortune in Hollywood. In the same year, he made his film debut in ‘Halloween II,’ as an ill-fated EMT. He received a role on the NBC sitcom “One of the Boys” in 1982. Despite the fact that the play was not well received by reviewers or audiences, it gave him much-needed early exposure in the industry. Following that, he appeared in films such as ‘This is Spinal Tap’ (1984) and ‘Racing with the Moon’ (1984).

In the same year, he returned to television in the ABC sitcom ‘Blue Thunder,’ playing the computer-whiz sidekick to officer James Farentino. Dana Carvey became one of the featured artists on ‘Saturday Night Live’ (SNL) in 1986. He introduced characters like the Church Lady, Hans the Bodybuilder, and the infamous Grumpy Old Man. He was immediately acknowledged as one of the major contributors to the show’s resurgence in the ratings.

He co-starred with Mike Myers in the American comedy picture “Wayne’s World” in 1992, which was a surprise hit during the post-Christmas season. ‘Wayne’s World 2’ (1993), on the other hand, failed to replicate its fresh comedy and box office revenues. After seven years on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ he quit in 1993 to pursue a career in film. His first leading part was in the film Opportunity Knocks,’ a generic comedy that, like his subsequent works such as ‘Clean Slate’ (1994) and ‘Trapped in Paradise,’ failed to connect with moviegoers (1994).

While appearing on the big screen, he made regular appearances on television, most notably as himself on ‘The Larry Sanders Show’ (1992–98). His show, ‘The Dana Carvey Show,’ launched on ABC in 1996 and was widely anticipated to be a hit. Although critics liked the show’s tone, it was not well welcomed by the public and was terminated after only a few episodes in less than a month.

He eventually abandoned his dream of being a film actor in favor of a career as a stand-up comedian. He wrote the sophomoric comedy ‘The Master of Disguise’ in 2002, which was widely criticized by critics but had a positive response from youthful audiences. He made only a few appearances over the next decade, including a quick reprise of his role as Garth on the 2008 MTV Movie Awards, opposite Mike Myers. ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ (2011), ‘Live with Regis and Kelly’ (2011), and as a guest host on ‘Live with Kelly’ (2011) are some of his recent appearances (2012). He also made a cameo appearance in the 2011 American comedy film “Jack and Jill.”

Saturday Night Live fans who were hoping to get more background information on all their favorite performers, skits, and more, will be happy to hear that Audacy’s Cadence 13 will be carrying on their deal with comedians and SNL alumnus, David Spade and Dana Carvey. The network has announced that the duo’s behind-the-scenes podcast, Fly on the Wall will be returning for a second season in January 2023.  The first season, which hit airwaves back in January 2022, saw David Spade and Dana Carvey sit down with a slew of ex-Saturday Night Live personalities, musical guests, writers, and more to dish on their favorite memories from their time on the weekly show.

During the premiere season’s run, audiences tuned in to hear the hosts chatting with the likes of Martin Short, Bob Odenkirk, Rob Lowe, Tina Fey, Tom Hanks, Bill Hader, Laraine Newman, Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Mike Myers, Jimmy Fallon, Jon Lovitz, Conan O’Brien, John Mulaney, and Tim Meadows. While the follow up season’s lineup hasn’t been announced, it’s sure to include some knockout talent on the same legendary caliber as the first. Accompanying the big announcement, David Spade and Dana Carvey shared a statement recounting being asked to join the podcast last year.

Carvey talked about a phone call he received from his close friend asking him if he would be at all interested in sitting behind a microphone and talking about their experiences on Saturday Night Live. He was already sold on the subject matter, but when Spade informed Carvey that he would indeed be able to do the gig from the comfort of his own basement and in his pajamas, Carvey giddily obliged and the rest is history.

David Spade and Dana Carvey crossed paths on Saturday Night Live in the early ‘90s, close to the end of Carvey’s seven season run. The two would perform alongside each other from 1990-1993, which is when Carvey left the show. Carvey would also star in the iconic SNL based production, Wayne’s World and its sequel Wayne’s World 2 alongside Mike Myers. Since then, Carvey’s held roles in productions including Trapped in Paradise and The Master of Disguise.

David Spade stayed on the variety show for one season less than Dana Carvey, but still left quite an impression for the years and comedians to follow. Like Carvey, Spade is also a master of impressions and landed various fan favorite sketches throughout his tenure. Breaking into the world of film, Spade would famously star alongside fan favorite SNL star Chris Farley in Tommy Boy and would go on to star in comedies including Joe DirtDickie Roberts: Former Child StarGrown Ups, and The Wrong Missy. His voice has also appeared in several animated features including .The Emperor’s New Groove and in the Hotel Transylvania franchise.
