David Fincher Bio

David Fincher was born in 1962 in Denver, Colorado, and reared in Marin County, California. He is the director of the film The Social Network. As soon as he turned 18 years old, he began working for John Korty at Korty Films in Mill Valley, California. From 1981 to 1983, he worked as a lighting designer for ILM (Industrial Light and Magic). When Fincher left ILM, he went to work for N. Lee Lacy in Hollywood, where he directed TV advertisements and music videos. He went on to co-found Propaganda with fellow directors Dominic Sena, Greg Gold, and Nigel Dick in 1987, which is still in operation today. During Fincher’s first year of life in San Anselmo in Marin County, the family relocated to the state of California.

Fincher relocated to Ashland, Oregon, while he was in his twenties, and he went on to graduate from Ashland High School in that city.  Fincher was inspired by the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and began producing films with an 8 mm camera when he was eight years old. Fincher directed the film Seven in 1995. According to the film, which was based on a script written by Andrew Kevin Walker, the tale revolved around two detectives (portrayed in the film by Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman) who are on the trail of a serial killer who patterns his murders on the seven deadly sins. The picture earned more than $100 million in the United States and more than $300 million overseas.

In the beginning, Arnold Kopelson, the chairman of New Line Cinema, refused to allow shooting to take place for the shocking climax scene. By enlisting the assistance of Brad Pitt, who claimed that he would not be associated with the project if the conclusion were changed, Fincher was granted permission to shoot the original scene and utilize it as part of the final edit of the film. Fincher landed a job moving cameras and performing other manual labor for John Korty’s Korty Films, where he has been working ever since. In 1980, he was hired by Industrial Light & Magic, where he worked on movies such as Twice Upon a Time, Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, among others. A commercial for the American Cancer Society that included a pregnant woman smoking a cigarette was his last project before leaving ILM in 1984.

Alien 3 marked Fincher’s feature film debut after he had directed several music videos (1992). However, despite receiving an Academy Award nomination for special effects, the picture was not well received by reviewers or moviegoers alike. Fincher became embroiled in a number of legal battles with 20th Century Fox over screenplay and budget concerns, among other things. During The Director’s Cut, he accuses the producers of failing to place the essential confidence in him. As a result, Fincher returned to the field of commercial and music video directing, directing the video for The Rolling Stones’ Grammy Award-winning song Love Is Strong (1994) and other projects.

It was because of this that Fincher came to the attention of the producers in Los Angeles, who offered him the opportunity to film the documentary The Beat of the Live Drum, which starred Rick Springfield and was released in 1985. He would continue to direct ads for corporations such as Revlon, Converse, Nike. Pepsi. Sony. Levi’s. But Fincher would soon find music videos and would go on to direct a large number of promotional videos. Nike, Coca-Cola, Budweiser, Heineken, Pepsi, Levi’s, Converse, AT&T, and Chanel are just a few of the brands for which Fincher has directed television commercials. Since then, he’s directed music videos for Madonna, Sting, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, George Michael, Iggy Pop (The Wallflowers), Billy Idol (Steve Win wood), The Motels (A Perfect Circle), and a slew of other artists. He’s currently working on a film project with A Perfect Circle.

David Fincher was born and reared in the California town of San Anselmo, where he developed a lifelong fascination with cinema at a young age, in part due to his proximity to filmmaker George Lucas. Fincher started working as an assistant cameraman at Industrial Light & Magic, George Lucas’ special-effects studio, while he was still a teenager. The late 1980s saw Fincher begin directing commercials, which swiftly developed into an established career as a music video director for major labels. In the 1980s and 1990s, he directed some of the most iconic music videos of the era, including those for Madonna’s Express Yourself (1989) and Vogue (1990), as well as Aerosmith’s Janie’s Got a Gun (1989). These videos were notable for their strong cinematic qualities, which included elaborate sets and deft camerawork.

Alien 3 marked Fincher’s feature-film directorial debut in 1992, and it remains one of his most successful films to date. There were problems with the production, and the film performed poorly both critically and commercially. Having had a bad experience with a major film franchise, Fincher decided to make a smaller-scale thriller called Se7en (1995), which revolved around two detectives (Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt) on the hunt for a serial killer (Kevin Spacey) who commits his murders in the name of the seven deadly sins. Se7en was a critical success, earning Fincher an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe nomination. The melancholy Se7en received great reviews and proved to be a commercial success, establishing Fincher as an up-and-coming director in the eyes of the film industry.

After that, he directed The Game (1997), in which a financier (Michael Douglas) becomes entangled in a perilous game of cat and mouse after receiving an unexplained birthday present from his errant brother (Sean Penn). Fincher is a perfectionist behind the camera, and he has become well-known for his penchant to shoot a scene multiple times—sometimes more than 50 times for a single, seemingly insignificant image. With his demanding personality came the creation of films with exceptional visual flare, like as his 1999 feature, Fight Club, which starred Brad Pitt and Edward Norton and told the story of an unsatisfied white-collar worker who starts an underground fighting organisation. That film also serves as a satirical investigation of one’s own self-identity as well as one’s masculinity. The film Fight Club was a critical and commercial failure during its theatrical run, but it quickly rose to fame on home video, where it gained a devoted following.

After that, Fincher directed Panic Room (2002), which tells the story of a mother (Jodie Foster) and daughter (Kristen Stewart) who are forced to flee their house after a terrifying invasion. It would be another five years until Fincher’s next feature picture, Zodiac (2007), which told the story of the Zodiac killer’s killings and the ultimately failed attempt to apprehend him was released. His most recent film, Zodiac, is a significant departure from his earlier works, as it lacks his typical dark colour palette, dismal urban locales, and dizzying camera angles. Instead, the film is a sophisticated and dramatic procedural that is narrated in a clear manner, evoking the classic paranoid “whodunits” of the 1970s while being contemporary. Fincher continues to widen his horizons with the direction of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), an adaptation of a short tale by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a guy (played by Pitt) who has the ability to age backward in time.

Despite the fact that it was not as critically acclaimed as Zodiac, the picture earned Fincher his first Academy Award nomination for best director for his work on it. A portrayal of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s ascent to power, The Social Network (2010), was his next project as director. Many critics acclaimed the picture as a 21st-century parallel to Citizen Kane, and Fincher was awarded the Golden Globe for best director and nominated for an Academy Award for his work. When Fincher directed The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), a slick adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling novel about the investigation of an unsolved murder, he reverted to a concentration on heinous crime. As an executive producer on the political drama House of Cards (2013–18), which was made for Netflix and released through the company’s online streaming-video service, he gained further experience.

Fincher also directed the first two hour-long episodes of the show, for which he was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the premiere episode. Gone Girl (2014), a thriller about the puzzling circumstances surrounding a woman’s disappearance, was his next project as a director. Gillian Flynn’s best-selling thriller novel was the inspiration for the film. Mindhunter (2017–19), a Netflix series about the FBI’s earliest criminal profilers, was Fincher’s next project. In addition to directing many episodes of the show, he also acted as executive producer. Later, he directed Mank (2020), a biopic about Herman Mankiewicz and his difficulties to create the script for Orson Welles’ classic Citizen Kane, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. The film got positive reviews, and Fincher was nominated for an Academy Award for best director for the third time.
