Fiona Shaw Bio

Fiona Shaw CBE (born Fiona Mary Wilson on July 10, 1958) is an Irish actor and director of theatre and opera. Petunia Dursley in the Harry Potter film series (2001–2010), Marnie Stonebrook in the fourth season of HBO’s True Blood (2011), and Carolyn Martens in the BBC series Killing Eve (2018–present) are some of her most well-known roles. Shaw won the 2019 BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Killing Eve.  She garnered Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, respectively, for her roles in the second seasons of Killing Eve and Fleabag.  She was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for the third season of Killing Eve. Shaw has collaborated with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre on numerous occasions.

Shaw studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, where he was part of a “new wave” of actors. She gained critical acclaim for her performance as Julia in Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s The Rivals at the National Theatre (1983). Celia in As You Like It (1984), Madame de Volanges in Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1985), Katherine in The Taming of the Shrew (1987), Lady Franjul in The New Inn (1987), Young Woman in Machinal (1993), Winnie in Happy Days (2007), and the title roles in Electra (1988), The Good Person of Sechuan (1989), Hedda Gabler (1991), The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1998), and Medea in Med (2000). She won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding One-Person Play for her performance of T. S. Eliot’s poetry The Waste Land into a one-person show at the Liberty Theatre in New York in 1996.  She portrayed Miss Morrison in the 1984 episode “The Adventure of the Crooked Man” of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Catherine Greenshaw in the 2013 Agatha Christie’s Marple episode “Greenshaw’s Folly.”

Shaw is most known for his role as the male lead in Deborah Warner’s 1995 film Richard II. Shaw has worked with Warner on stage and screen on a number of occasions.

Undercover Blues (1993), Persuasion (1995), Jane Eyre (1996), The Butcher Boy (1997), The Avengers (1998), Gormenghast (2000), and five Harry Potter films, in which she played Harry Potter’s aunt. Shaw appeared in Brian DePalma’s The Black Dahlia for a brief but pivotal role (2006). Shaw teamed up with Deborah Warner once more in 2009, playing the lead in Tony Kushner’s adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children. Rupert Christiansen called their professional collaboration as “probably one of the most richly creative teams in theatrical history” in a 2002 piece for The Daily Telegraph.

Emma “isn’t that good a parent,” Shaw liked. That is fantastic writing in my opinion because it is more engaging than [her] being a heroine. She’s a little cold, a little distant and preoccupied with work, and her children don’t know who she is. She develops her own enthusiasm for her children as part of the emotional trip. It’s not someone in a dominant position; it’s the polar opposite, and that’s always a good thing.”

The storey alternates between timelines, and it’s evident by the end of the first episode that Emma has been pushed to her limit. “There’s irony, and there’s hindsight,” says the narrator. It’s a lot about failure. I’m not sure it’s really about productivity in northern Europe, where we work so hard all of the time; I think it’s more about puritanism, because other countries manage to get things done and live much more peaceful lives. Emma is one of those persons who is almost always ‘on,’ her intestines tangled with anxiety. She’s always figuring things out, and then she can’t figure out .”

In the west, the Christian ethic predominates: that if you do good things, good things will come – but it isn’t that simple.

I hesitate to bring it up, but there are unmistakable parallels between Emma’s loss in Baptiste and Shaw’s wife’s trauma. Sonali Deraniyagala, an economist, lost her entire family in the 2004 tsunami, including her two sons, husband, and parents. Shaw and Deraniyagala met after Shaw read Deraniyagala’s heartbreaking memoir, Wave.

Was Shaw hesitant to take on this role after Deraniyagala’s heartbreaking loss? She says, “Yes,” right away. She says gently after a long pause: “I’m being delicate on Sonali’s behalf.” I’m not sure how to express it. I do, however, live with someone who has had tremendous tragedy in their life, probably the biggest tragedy of anyone [one] has ever encountered. Of course it exists, but one does not mine one’s life in this manner.” “I believe what happened to Sonali is worse,” she adds.

There is sadness, and then there is “catastrophic grief,” according to Shaw.
