Jay Cutler Bio

American retired professional football player Jay Cutler was a National Football League quarterback for 12 seasons, principally with the Chicago Bears. Cutler was born on April 29, 1983. The Denver Broncos took him in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft, where he spent three seasons while playing college football for the Vanderbilt Commodores. He spent eight seasons with the Bears after being traded to them in 2009. After being released by Chicago in 2017, Cutler announced his retirement, although he later played another season with the Miami Dolphins.

After the 2017 season, he announced his second and last retirement. 1983 saw the birth of Cutler in Santa Claus, Indiana. Cutler attended Lincoln City, Indiana’s Heritage Hills High School.  He started three seasons as a quarterback for the Patriots football team, compiling a total 26-1 record in his junior and senior seasons, including a perfect 15-0 record in his final year. In their victories, Cutler and his group outscored their foes 746 to 85, including a 90-0 rout of Pike Central. In his senior year, Cutler ran 65 times for 493 yards and 11 touchdowns while completing 122 of 202 passes for 2,252 yards.  He also started at safety for three years, and as a senior, he had the state’s 12th-most pass interceptions with nine.

As part of his team’s undefeated season during his senior year, Heritage Hills defeated Zionsville, 27-24, in overtime to win the school’s first 3A state title. The game’s most noteworthy play was when Cutler lateraled the ball to halfback Cole Seifrig, who subsequently handed it to Cutler and ran it into the end zone.  Cutler had 19 tackles while playing strong safety in the state final. Cutler studied in Nashville, Tennessee Vanderbilt University. The most starts by a quarterback in school history, he redshirted in his rookie year of 2001 before starting each of his 45 career games for the Commodores. In college, he never missed a game because of an injury.  During his career, the Commodores went 11-35, including 5-27 against the SEC.

In 2002, Cutler surpassed all other quarterbacks in the Southeastern Conference in terms of running yards and touchdowns by a freshman and established new records at his school. He was chosen for the first team of the SEC’s freshmen by the Associated Press. [4] As a junior in 2004, Cutler established a school record by completing 61.0 percent of his throws, throwing for 1,844 yards with 10 touchdowns and a career-low five interceptions. Cutler’s most successful year as a player at Vanderbilt was the 2005 campaign.

The first Commodore to earn the SEC Offensive Player of the Year since 1967, he started 11 games and completed 273 of 462 passes for 3,073 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions. Cutler’s performance during his senior year made him the second Commodore to pass for more than 3,000 yards in a single season, and his 273 completions and 21 touchdowns were second on the school’s history for a single season.

Under his direction, the Commodores defeated Tennessee, Wake Forest, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Richmond, and Wake Forest.  At the Florida Gators’ current home field, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, the Commodores also scored the second-most points ever against them. After a contentious excessive celebration penalty stopped the Commodores from going for two at the end of regulation, Vanderbilt came close to upsetting the 13th-ranked Gators before losing 49-42 in the second overtime.

According to former Denver Broncos safety John Lynch, who was thinking back on Cutler’s college career, “If this guy can take a bunch of future doctors and attorneys and have them compete against the Florida Gators, this guy is a superstar.” On December 3, Cutler took his first NFL snap. After some early nerves, he threw his first touchdown pass to tight end Stephen Alexander.  To tie the score at 20-20 in the fourth quarter, he fired a remarkable 71-yard touchdown pass to fellow rookie Brandon Marshall. It was the second-longest pass play between two rookies in Broncos history and one of the longest touchdown throws for a debut in NFL history.  In the defeat, he also had two interceptions and three sacks.

In a road defeat to the San Diego Chargers on December 10, Cutler connected with tight end Tony Scheffler for two touchdown passes in a space of 48 seconds, which is tied for the quickest time in league history that two rookies threw two touchdown passes. On December 17, during his third start, Cutler earned his first victory, a 37-20 triumph against the Arizona Cardinals on the road.

The greatest QB rating for a Broncos rookie since John Elway in 1983, he ended the game 21 of 31 for 261 yards, two touchdowns, an interception, and a QB rating of 101.7. On the game’s third play for the Broncos, Javon Walker scored one touchdown that was 54 yards long and went 65 yards in the air. According to Shanahan, “You seen his abilities today. It doesn’t take a genius to see that this player is incredibly collected and capable of confidently making all throws and moves.”

Cutler later guided the Broncos to a 24-23 victory against the Cincinnati Bengals on Christmas Eve in his fourth start of the year.He completed 12 of his 23 passes for 179 yards, two touchdowns, and only one interception. In the third quarter, he also led the Broncos on a 99-yard drive that ended with a two-yard touchdown run by Mike Bell. Cutler became the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to throw for at least two touchdowns in each of his first four games played thanks to the two throwing touchdowns he had against the Bengals.  Additionally, he made history by being only the fifth player overall  to make at least two touchdown passes in each of his first four starts.

The Broncos’ attempt to secure a postseason spot fell short in the season’s last game, which they lost at home to the San Francisco 49ers 26-23 in overtime. The defeat left the Broncos with a 9-7 overall mark and a 4-4 home record. Cutler completed 21 of 32 passes for 230 yards and a score despite suffering a concussion in the first half. He also guided the Denver Broncos on a game-tying touchdown drive in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime. Cutler concluded his playing career with a victory against Tennessee that was Vanderbilt’s first over the Volunteers since 1982 (the year before Cutler was born) and their first in Knoxville since 1975.
