Jenna Coleman Bio

Jenna-Louise Coleman (born April 27, 1986), known professionally as Jenna Coleman since 2013, is an English actress. She is most recognised for her roles as Jasmine Thomas in Emmerdale, Clara Oswald in Doctor Who, Queen Victoria in the period drama Victoria, Joanna Lindsay in the crime miniseries The Cry, and Marie-Andrée Leclerc in the crime miniseries The Serpent.

Karen and Keith Coleman’s daughter  was born in Blackpool on April 27, 1986. Her father is a joiner and interior fitter for bars and restaurants. She has a younger brother, Ben, who works as a joiner. Her grandma named her Jenna Wade, a character from the American television series Dallas.  She was the head girl at the Arnold School in Blackpool.

She was a member of the theatre company In Yer Space while at school, and she appeared in the piece Crystal Clear at the Edinburgh Festival alongside them. Her performance was recognised with an award, and the play was well-received.She was offered a place to study English at the University of York, but she declined because she wanted to play Jasmine Thomas in Emmerdale.

In 2005, Coleman was cast as Jasmine Thomas in Emmerdale. She was nominated for the “Best Newcomer” award at the British Soap Awards in 2007, as well as the “Most Popular Newcomer” award at the National Television Awards in 2006.

The adaptation was supposed to premiere in April 2011, however it was cancelled owing to a rights dispute between the production firm and the estate of Braine. By 2012, the matter had been addressed, and the show aired in two parts on September 26 and 27, 2012.  With a tiny role in Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011, she made her feature picture debut.  She was also cast as Annie Desmond in Julian Fellowes’ four-part mini-series Titanic, where she was described as a “cheeky little Cockney” and “the ship’s Eliza Doolittle.”

In the adaption of Death Comes to Pemberley, she played Lydia Wickham. The three episodes aired on BBC One over the Christmas season of 2013. Coleman landed the role of Rosie in Stephen Poliakoff’s original drama series Dancing on the Edge in 2012, which recounts the adventures of a black jazz ensemble in the 1930s. In February 2013, the show aired on BBC Two.

At a press conference on March 21, 2012, Doctor Who producer Steven Moffat stated that Coleman would play the Eleventh Doctor’s companion (Matt Smith).

She was nominated for “Best Actress,” “Sexiest Female,” and “Best Dramatic Performance” at the 2009 British Soap Awards. She received a nomination for the TV Choice Awards’ “Best Actress” category. Coleman was cast as “hard girl” Lindsay James in the BBC school drama series Waterloo Road in May 2009.

Coleman found the experience of playing a schoolgirl “surreal” because she was 23 at the time of her audition. Coleman was cast as Susan Brown in a BBC Four television version of John Braine’s novel Room at the Top, which premiered in December 2010.

Moffat cast her in the part because she worked well with Smith and spoke quicker than he could. She auditioned for the part under the guise of auditioning for Men on Waves (an anagram for “Woman Seven,” as she would make her first appearance in the show’s seventh season).  In July of 2015, Coleman Coleman made a surprise cameo on 1 September 2012 in the first episode of the seventh season as Oswin Oswald, a guest character, despite having been slated to begin her.

Coleman made her series regular debut as Victorian governess and barmaid Clara Oswin Oswald in the Christmas special episode “The Snowmen.” Coleman also appeared in that episode as a third incarnation of the character, a twenty-first-century Londoner named Clara Oswald. This version of the Doctor began her journeys as his regular companion in “The Bells of Saint John,” including after his regeneration into the Twelfth Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, in the 2013 Christmas special episode “The Time of the Doctor.” Coleman was cast in the role of Clara for Series 9 in the 2014 Christmas special episode “Last Christmas.”

Coleman had opted to leave the programme after the ninth series to take on a role as Queen Victoria in an ITV production.  She made a cameo appearance in the Twelfth Doctor’s final episode, “Twice Upon a Time,” and that episode, Doctor Who’s 2017 Christmas special, aired the same evening as Victoria’s first Christmas special. Jenna Coleman was her first on-screen credit in Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor, which broadcast on August 4, 2013.
