Josephine Behar settled down to domestic life in Centereach, Long Island, after completing her M.A. in 1966, while her husband completed his Ph.D. studies at Stony Brook. However, being a ‘city girl,’ she struggled to acclimate to Centereach life and felt out of place.
Behar began his career as an English teacher at Lindenhurst Senior High School in 1968. Despite the fact that she disliked teaching, she had a number of academic positions until 1979. She taught college students who were enlisted during the Vietnam War at the conclusion of this time.
