Her other notable works include the roles of Lois Wren in Doctors (2014), Young Alice Williamson in Wolf Hall (2015), Hannah Devlin in Doctors (2016), and Becky Sidebottom in Free Rein (2017). Her most recent notable role was in Free Rein (2017). Game of Thrones on HBO has been responsible for the deaths of a variety of characters, including parents, children, sons, daughters, the one truly good man in Westeros, dire wolves, and even a dragon. Even so, the news of the passing of Shireen Baratheon, the scarred but good-hearted princess who belonged to Stannis Baratheon’s family, came as a shock to everyone.

Stannis made a choice in the ninth episode of the fifth season, when he was lost, defeated, and desperately grasping for an easy out. At the urging of the Red Woman, he sacrificed his only daughter to the Red God by setting fire to her as a sacrifice so that his army would not perish from the cold and hunger. It is abundantly clear that the plan did not succeed. His allies turned their backs on him, his reputation was sullied, and his followers caused a ruckus on social media. Actress Kerry Ingram, who is now 19 years old, recently spoke to EW about Shireen and said, “I think she’s very understanding, but I don’t think it’s something she’d forgive him for.” “That might be going a little too far for me. She is unquestionably unassertive, but I believe that some of her statements are a little bit out of line.”

KERRY INGRAM: It was made clear to me right from the start of the fifth season that my character would be killed off, but I was never told how or when this would take place. This was strange because it allowed me to keep my mind open to all the different ways in which this could take place. And then, somewhere around the middle of the production, I’d just finished all of my scenes that weren’t in the actual episode, and then I got a phone call from the [showrunners] David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss], just explaining what’s going to happen and how it goes down. And immediately following that phone call, I was given the script.

It was very strange. I wasn’t really affected by it at all. I left the show and did not return until the following summer, when they resumed production, but I did not travel to Belfast for the shoot. It just seemed to me that I had completed another season, and that we would all be back together the following year. It wasn’t until June or July that it really hit me how strange it was that I wasn’t going back to Belfast with my friends like everyone else was doing at that time. There was a range of feelings. I had high hopes that it would turn out well and present a significant opportunity. It’s not like you get to film something like that, filled with all those feelings, every day. Therefore, I was thrilled, but also a little bit depressed; in all honesty, I felt a little bit of everything. … [The scene] was filmed over the course of three days, with me being needed for only two of those days (the third day was a day off).

We began by filming all of these surrounding elements, such as the walk and the dialogue, and then we moved on to filming everyone else’s shots. Finally, we wrapped up the day by filming my take, which was the very last thing we did. … It was very stressful to go through. Because of the large number of extras, it felt almost as though I had a very large audience. Therefore, we filmed it in the order that it occurred. Because we were in a quarry, the temperature was very low. My recollection is that I was dressed in a number of layers all at once. At one point, I seem to recall the fire getting a little bit too close for my comfort for the situation. I seem to recall that at one point they did a close-up and said something along the lines of “That was really good.” I was thinking to myself, “You’re kidding me!” It worked out well.
