Benicio del Toro Bio

Monserrate, Benicio Actor and producer benicio del Toro was born in Puerto Rico on February 19, 1967.  He won an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Silver Bear for his depiction of the cynical but morally pure police officer Javier Rodriguez in the movie Traffic. He has also received widespread praise and countless honours. In Alejandro González Iárritu’s 21 Grams, Del Toro played Jack Jordan, an ex-converted religious zealot in despair, and his performance earned him a second nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Del Toro’s parents, Gustavo Adolfo del Toro Bermdez and Fausta Genoveva Sánchez Rivera both attorneys, gave birth to him on February 19, 1967, in San Germán, Puerto Rico. In the Bushwick neighbourhood of Brooklyn, New York, Gustavo, his elder brother, serves as the Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center. His maternal great-grandmother was Basque, while his great-grandfather was Catalan.

Rafael Rivera Esbr, one of the heroes of the El Polvorin fire in Ponce and eventually elected mayor of that city, was Del Toro’s great-grandfather. Late in the 1980s, Del Toro began to appear in modest television parts, mostly portraying thugs and drug traffickers on shows like Miami Vice and the NBC miniseries Drug Wars: The Camarena Story. He was a background figure on a vehicle hood in the 1987 music video for Madonna’s song “La Isla Bonita.” Following his cinematic debut in Big Top Pee-wee, del Toro went on to portray Dario in the James Bond movie Licence to Kill.

The biographical movies The Argentine and Guerrilla earned del Toro the Prix d’interpretation masculine at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008 for his depiction of Che Guevara  Along with filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, del Toro dedicated his prize “to the man himself, Che Guevara” in his acceptance speech.  Del Toro’s depiction of Che Guevara earned him the 2009 Goya Award for Best Actor.

Sean Penn, who won the Best Actor Oscar in 2009 for his role in Milk, expressed his astonishment and disappointment that Che and del Toro did not get any nominations for the Academy Awards. Penn voiced his surprise at the lack of crowns on Soderbergh and del Toro’s heads during his acceptance speech for the Best Actor award at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, saying, “That is such a great movie, Che.” [18] Del Toro lost 35 pounds for the film’s concluding scenes  to depict how sick Che Guevara had grown in the Bolivian wilderness as he neared the end of his life.

Del Toro attracted a wide following in 2000 thanks to his roles in four movies. First, he collaborated once again with The Usual Suspects screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie on the criminal thriller The Way of the Gun. A few months later, in Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic, a nuanced examination of the drug battles in North America, he stood out amid an outstanding ensemble cast. Del Toro, who uttered the majority of his lines in Spanish, had a performance that dominated the movie as Javier Rodriguez, a Mexican border policeman who struggles to maintain his integrity among the deceit and corruption of the illicit drug trade.

In 2001, his performance won every major critics’ prize. Del Toro became the fourth live Oscar winner whose winning part was a character who communicates mostly in a language other than English when he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Del Toro follows Jose Ferrer and Rita Moreno as the third actor from Puerto Rico to get an Oscar. Two Puerto Rican actors were nominated in the same category for the first time the year he won his Oscar.

Del Toro dedicated his medal to the citizens of Nogales, Sonora and Nogales, Arizona, and thanked them in his acceptance speech. Along with the Oscar, he also received the Best Actor prize from the Screen Actors Guild and the Golden Globe. The box office performance of Traffic was similarly positive. This was swiftly followed by a minor part as the diamond thief Franky Four Fingers in Guy Ritchie’s hip-hop comedy Snatch and a part as a Native American man with mental impairment in Sean Penn’s film The Pledge.

His breakthrough performance in The Usual Suspects, where he portrayed the muttering, wisecracking Fred Fenster, gave his career a boost in 1995.The part made him a character actor and earned him the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male. Stronger roles in independent and big-budget movies followed, including Gaspare in Abel Ferrara’s The Funeral, for which he received a second consecutive Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male, and Benny Dalmau in Julian Schnabel’s Basquiat, which was directed by his friend, the filmmaker and artist. In the high-profile thriller The Fan, Del Toro co-starred with Robert De Niro as the flamboyant Puerto Rican baseball player Juan Primo. The next year, he co-starred with Alicia Silverstone in the Silverstone-produced film Excess Baggage.

He has also played the Collector in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Pablo Escobar in the 2014 film Escobar: Paradise Lost, Lawrence Talbot in the 2010 version of The Wolfman, and the codebreaker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, among other characters. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie in 2018 for his performance as Richard Matt in the Showtime miniseries Escape at Dannemora.
