Richard O’Brien Bio
Richard Timothy Smith is a well-known actor born in Cheltenham, England. He is also a writer, presenter, voice actor, and performer in the theatre. He is most known for writing the script and music for The Rocky Horror Show in 1973, Shock Treatment in 1981, and all the canceled shows, and for providing his voice as Lawrence Fletcher in Disney’s “Phineas and Ferb.” Both of these works were produced in 1973.
In 1951, Richard’s family made the journey from England to Tauranga, New Zealand, when Richard’s father, who had worked as an accountant, decided to become a sheep farmer. O’Brien developed an interest in acting when he was in neighboring Hamilton, seeing double features of horror and science fiction. His love of rock and roll joined this interest.
In 1964, he relocated back to England, where he experimented with a career as a singer before transitioning into a career as a movie stuntman and fringe theatre performer. He wanted to avoid being confused with another Richard Smith, so one day, when he was on the phone with British Actors Equity, he decided to alter his name to O’Brien, which was the name of his cherished maternal grandmother.
He first became acquainted with the film director Jim Sharman in 1972, when Sharman put him in the twin parts of Apostle and Leper for the London stage version of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” which had been transported from the production in Sharman’s home in Australia.
While O’Brien was working with Sharman on a production of Sam Shepard’s “The Unseen Hand,” O’Brien brought up the new rock musical that he had been composing and titled “Rock Horror.” The play was first named “They Came from Denton High,” but at Sharman’s suggestion, the name was changed to “The Rocky Horror Show” before being performed for the first time in June 1973. In 1975, a movie based on the play was released under The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
In that amount of time, he penned the screenplay. He modeled Frank-N-Furter after Alice Cooper to create the character. Frank-N-Furter was referred to as an “Alice Cooper-type Frankenstein” in the original handwritten notes that he penned for the Rocky Horror Show, which were later included in the 1979 playbook The Rocky Horror Scrapbook. After coming to New Zealand from England when he was young, Richard O’Brien spent his childhood in Hamilton.
On November 25, 2004, the city of Hamilton, New Zealand, played host to the unveiling of a life-size bronze monument of O’Brien depicting him in his Riff Raff space suit. A local theatrical company and the Hamilton City Council commissioned the monument. It is located on the former Embassy Cinema site, where O’Brien used to go to see science-fiction double features when he was younger. In 2015, O’Brien appeared in a special performance of The Rocky Horror Show Live as a guest performer playing the role of the Narrator.
He continued to collaborate with Richard Hartley on the composition of musicals such as T. Zee (1976), Disaster (1978), The Stripper (1982), and Top People (1984). Both of them contributed three songs to the soundtrack of the movie The Return of Captain Invincible (1983). O’Brien penned his one-man revue, Disgracefully Yours (1985), while performing under the guise of Mephistopheles Smith. In addition, he had roles in the films Jubilee (1977), Flash Gordon (1980), Dark City (1998), Ever After (1998), and Dungeons & Dragons (2000). In addition, he appeared as the corrupt druid Gulnar in five episodes of the third season of the HTV dramatization of Robin of Sherwood.
These episodes were shown during the third season. Absolute is the name of a music CD that contains tracks from the album Disgracefully Yours. The year 1998 saw the release of O’Brien. In 1990, he was given the role of host of the game show The Crystal Maze, which was shown on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom. It was consistently the show with the greatest ratings on Channel 4, reaching a maximum of 7 million people for the Christmas special broadcast in 1993.
After the conclusion of the fourth season of “The Crystal Maze” in 1993, O’Brien decided to leave the show. In the stage version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang that was staged in the West End, he was cast in the part of the Child Catcher. In 1995, he gave a few performances as Mephistopheles Smith in a musical comedy show he wrote called Disgracefully Yours.
Years later, he was granted permission to adapt the show into a musical, which was staged for the first time by Eubank Productions at the Kansas City Fringe Fest in 2006 and then again by Janus Theatre Company at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2007 under the title Mephistopheles Smith. In the latter part of 2005, he made an appearance (in the role of the ghost of the mirror) in the pantomime adaptation of Snow White that was performed at the Milton Keynes Theatre. During the summer of 2006, he performed at Buckingham Palace as the Child Catcher as part of the festivities commemorating the Queen’s 80th birthday.
To commemorate the milestone occasion of his seventieth birthday, he marked it by doing a show entitled “It’s Party Time with Richard O’Brien” at the Hamilton Founders Theatre in 2012. He played the role of Fagin in the musical. Recently, in October of 2016, he participated in a one-off edition of the Celebrity Crystal Maze on Channel 4 that raised money for the charity ‘Stand Up To Cancer by acting as the Crystal Maze Computer.
My father, Alec, was thoughtful and empathetic, but he was not a devoted parent. Numbers and I simply don’t get along. When Pythagoras entered my world in high school, I’d be sitting at the kitchen table staring at these figures and theorems, but my father, an accountant, would never come over to assist me, even though he knew I needed it.
Even though both of her parents were upstanding citizens, my mother, Mary, had a profound sense of guilt over her upbringing in the working class. She noted all the terrible individuals in the world and concluded that she needed to model her behavior after theirs.
She evolved into a person who was prejudiced and condescending. She was unable to fulfill the function of this Lady Bountiful figure because she had the intellectual ability to do so. As a result, she evolved into a very dumb lady. The fictional character of Frank-N-Furter is a dishonest and self-serving drama queen. Once, I said, “You remind me a lot of my mum, honestly.”
She went on and on about how her children were the most important thing in her life, but at the same time, she would engage in nefarious behavior to build a rift between us so that she could intervene. She would shatter your heart. Once, I made a valiant effort to reason with her, but by the time we were done, I had to admit that she was utterly insane. Because of this, everything that she does may be justified.
Robert, my oldest brother, resides in Australia, and while I try to see him whenever I can, I find that spending time with other born-again Christians is challenging. Robert is one of these individuals. My siblings, Gillian and Robin, still reside in New Zealand, where we relocated when I was ten. I was the smallest of the litter when I was born.
I believe that I am very distinct from those people. Being transgender might be seen as a kind of curse. When I was six years old, I already knew that when I grew up, I wanted to be a fairy princess. After revealing such a secret to my older brother, I realized that it was best for me to keep such information to myself in the future. My whole life, I’ve been perplexed by it, and I believe that’s contributed to the fact that I tend to keep to myself. I am thankful that over the last few years, I have made it a point to give in to it and live life to the fullest.
If I dress up for my kids, it makes no difference to them. They are pretty enjoyable. Linus is forty years old and resides in the city of Los Angeles. He performs a little amount of DJing with music, slightly beyond my comprehension. Then there is Joshua, 29 years old, who works at a post-production studio. Joshua enjoys all of those things that are considered to be nerdy. Amelia is 23 years old and attends a school of art.
I love children. It is one of my favorite things to do: bathe them and then tell them a tale. It’s genuinely a pity when kids reach adulthood. I also made it a point to take them back to New Zealand regularly because I wanted them to have a relationship with their cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents if anything were to happen to me. But I will never get over the fact that I deserted Amelia when she was only three years old. It wasn’t working well, so I didn’t mind leaving my wife, but I wish I could have brought Amelia with me. I regret not being able to get her with me.
