Vincent D’Onofrio Bio

Vincent Philip D’Onofrio (born June 30, 1959) is an actor, director, and producer from the United States.  He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award and won two Saturn Awards for his antagonist role in Men in Black.  (2000), New York City Police Detective Robert Goren in Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2001–11), Wilson Fisk / Kingpin in Daredevil (2015–18), and Victor “Vic” Hoskins in Jurassic World (2015–18) are among his notable roles (2015). D’Onofrio was born in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New York City, on June 30, 1959. He has ancestors from Naples and is of Italian heritage. His parents, Gennaro and Phyllis D’Onofrio, met while Gennaro was in the US Air Force stationed in Hawaii.

Gennaro studied interior design but spent most of his free time participating in amateur theatre.  Vincent is the youngest of three brothers and sisters. Antoinette (born 1956) and Elizabeth (born 1957), an actress and theatre coach from Fort Myers Beach, Florida, are his older siblings. During his early years, he was raised in Hawaii and Colorado.  When D’Onofrio was a child, his parents split, and his mother eventually married George Meyer. Guy and Connie, Meyer’s children from a previous marriage, became his stepbrothers. The family moved to the Hialeah neighbourhood of Florida. D’Onofrio, who grew up as a quiet youngster who spent “a lot of time in my room, keeping in my head,”later developed an interest in magic and sleight of hand, which he learnt from Cuban entertainers who ran a small magic shop.

He worked backstage in set building and sound production at his father’s community theatre when he was in his teens.

Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School was his alma mater.D’Onofrio began performing on stage after graduating from high school. He worked on local community theatre performances during an 18-month tenure at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado. He went on to study method acting under Sonia Moore and Sharon Chatten at the American Stanislavsky Theater and the Actors Studio, where he won his first paid job in off-This Broadway’s Property Is Condemned.  He later appeared in other of their plays, including Of Mice and Men and Sexual Perversity in Chicago. D’Onofrio pursued his acting career by working as a bouncer at the Hard Rock Cafe, a bodyguard for Robert Plant and Yul Brynner, and a deliveryman.

In 1984, he made his Broadway debut in Open Admissions as Nick Rizzoli. In 1986, D’Onofrio played Pvt. Leonard Lawrence, an overweight, bumbling Marine recruit in the film Full Metal Jacket, which is widely regarded as the defining role of his acting career. D’Onofrio was advised to send audition recordings to director Stanley Kubrick in England by a friend, Matthew Modine. D’Onofrio was cast in the role after four tapes. Pvt. Lawrence was originally scripted as a “thin stupid redneck,” but Kubrick decided the role would be more impactful if the character was huge and awkward. For the part, D’Onofrio gained 70 lb (32 kg), bringing his total weight to 280 lb (130 kg). This is still the record for an actor gaining the greatest weight for a film. D’Onofrio hurt his left knee while filming an obstacle course sequence for the film, which necessitated surgical reconstruction due to his heavy weight.

D’Onofrio shed nearly all of the weight he gained for his role in Full Metal Jacket over the course of nine months after filming ended. In Adventures in Babysitting, he played Dawson, the owner of Dawson’s Garage (1987). He makes an appearance in a sequence at the end of the movie. In 1988, he was cast in another supporting part, this time as the fiancé of Lili Taylor’s character in the film Mystic Pizza. He was billed under his full name Vincent Phillip D’Onofrio in the film, which was Julia Roberts’ debut film.

D’Onofrio continued to appear in minor or supporting roles, including the father of a saint in Nancy Savoca’s Household Saints (1993), director Orson Welles in Tim Burton’s Ed Wood (1994), farmer Edgar and the evil “Bug” who possesses him in Men in Black (1997), a man who claims to be from the future in Happy Accidents (2000), and serial killer Carl Stargher opposite Jennifer Lopez’s character in The Cell (2000).

In Robert Altman’s The Player, he played an ambitious screenwriter in 1992. He made the transition to television in 1997, when his performance as John Lange in the Homicide: Life on the Street episode “Subway” earned him an Emmy nomination. He turned down a role on The Sopranos in 1999.  In the 2000 film Steal This Movie, D’Onofrio played Marxist militant Abbie Hoffman, with Janeane Garofalo as his wife.

In 2001, he began playing Det. Robert Goren on the NBC/USA Network television drama Law & Order: Criminal Intent, which would become his longest and arguably most well-known role. On March 1, 2008, D’Onofrio’s character Det. Robert Goren made a cameo appearance in a Saturday Night Live spoof about the presidential race.  He interrogates Hillary Clinton in the sketch (played by Amy Poehler). The Law & Order “dun-DUN” sound is used to mark his entrance and leave from the skit.
