“American Beauty” is a 1999 American drama film that was a critical and financial success, earning five Academy Awards, including best picture, for its efforts. A dark parody of suburban life, written and directed by Alan Ball and Sam Mendes, that takes potshots at a typical middle-class American family, murders off its flawed but charming main character, and yet manages to impart a message of forgiveness and redemption.

The film chronicles the final few months of Lester Burnham’s life, as narrated by Kevin Spacey, who plays the role of the narrator in the film. Lester lives in a nondescript suburb with Carolyn (Annette Bening), a materialistic real estate broker who is dissatisfied with her degree of success, and their miserable teenage daughter, Jane. Carolyn is a real estate broker who is dissatisfied with her level of success (Thora Birch). Lester is likewise dissatisfied with his employment.

In order to watch Jane perform with the other cheerleaders at Jane’s high school, Lester and Carolyn attend a basketball game at Jane’s school. While there, Lester develops a strong attraction to another cheerleader, Jane’s friend Angela (Mena Suvari), much to Jane’s dismay. Angela, on the other hand, is delighted by the attention. Jane is at home when she discovers that the adolescent lad next door, Ricky (Wes Bentley), is photographing her with his camera with his permission.

Ricky’s violent father, Colonel Fitts of the United States Marine Corps (Chris Cooper), shows his displeasure with the shamelessness of a homosexual couple in the neighborhood as he drives Ricky to school the next morning. In the next day’s events, Lester and Carolyn attend a real estate company gathering, where Carolyn introduces Lester to top salesperson Buddy Kane (Peter Gallagher). In the midst of the celebration, Lester discovers Ricky working as a waiter; Ricky and Lester walk outside to smoke marijuana, and Ricky offers to provide Lester with the substance.

In response to Angela stating that he would be more beautiful if he worked out, Lester walks to the garage, takes off his clothes, and sees himself in the mirror before starting to lift weights; Ricky records the whole incident in his video camera. Later, Lester goes to Ricky to get marijuana, and Carolyn witnesses him smoking and working out as a result. Despite the fact that Lester is fired, he is given a substantial severance payment. Carolyn has an affair with Buddy, and Lester is hired as a cook at a fast-food restaurant in order to support his family.

In the meanwhile, Jane and Ricky begin to develop a love relationship, but Colonel Fitts begins to assume that Ricky is homosexual due to his appearance. Carolyn and Buddy are caught kissing in the drive-through line at Lester’s new workplace, which he witnesses. In order to satisfy Lester’s need for more marijuana, Ricky rolls a joint for him, which prompts Colonel Fitts to believe that an illicit sexual activity is going place in front of him.

Ricky is confronted by Colonel Fitts, who discovers that he is selling sexual favors for money, and his father kicks him out of the home. Ricky visits Jane at her home, where he criticizes Angela, who has been involved in a quarrel with Jane. Colonel Fitts, visibly distressed, comes up to Lester’s garage, where Lester is doing some weight training. Colonel Fitts enters via the front door, and Lester gently rebuffs his effort to kiss him on the lips.

Lester enters the home and discovers Angela alone in the living room. He starts to entice her, but when she informs him that she is a virgin, he immediately backs away from the situation. Angela is taken to the kitchen by Lester, who prepares a light meal for her.

He inquires as to Jane’s well-being, and Angela responds that Jane believes she is in love with him. When Angela inquires as to Lester’s well-being, he discovers that he is actually content. Angela exits the room, and Lester is fatally shot by an unknown assailant. Lieutenant Colonel Fitts is revealed to have been the murderer in a final montage in which Lieutenant Colonel Lester discusses his revelation about the beauty of daily living.
