Harry Belafonte (born Harold George Bellanfanti Jr. on March 1, 1927) is a singer, composer, activist, and actor from the United States. In the 1950s, he was one of the most successful Jamaican-American pop performers, popularising the Trinbagonian Caribbean musical style with a worldwide audience.

Belafonte is well known for his version of “The Banana Boat Song,” which includes the iconic lyric “Day-O.” He has recorded and performed in a variety of genres. He has also appeared in a number of films, including Carmen Jones (1954), Island in the Sun (1957), and Odds Against Tomorrow (1961).

Belafonte looked up to actor, musician, and activist Paul Robeson, who was a close associate of Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. As he subsequently remembered, “Paul Robeson was my first significant formative influence; you could say he gave me my backbone. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the second; he fed my soul.” Belafonte has been an outspoken supporter of political and humanitarian causes such as the Anti-Apartheid Movement and USA for Africa throughout his career.

He was a prominent opponent of the policies of the George W. Bush administrations. Belafonte serves as a celebrity ambassador for juvenile justice issues for the American Civil Liberties Union.

Belafonte has received three Grammy Awards (including one for Lifetime Achievement), an Emmy Award and a Tony Award. He was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors in 1989. He became enamoured with the art form and met Sidney Poitier. The financially strapped couple purchased a single seat to local plays on a regular basis, swapping places in between acts after notifying the other about the play’s progress. At the end of the 1940s, he studied acting at The New School’s Dramatic Workshop with prominent German director Erwin Piscator, alongside Marlon Brando, Tony Curtis, Walter Matthau, Bea Arthur, and Sidney Poitier, while also appearing with the American Negro Theater. He later won a Tony Award for his performance in the Broadway musical John Murray Anderson’s Almanac.
