Dame Judith Olivia Dench, CH DBE FRSA, is an English actress who was born on December 9, 1934. She is regarded as one of the top actors in the United Kingdom, and is known for her diverse work in a variety of films and television shows spanning a variety of genres, as well as her numerous stage performances.

Dench has won an Academy Award, a Tony Award, two Golden Globe Awards, four British Academy Television Awards, six British Academy Film Awards, and seven Olivier Awards during her career, which spans six decades.Dench first appeared on stage with the Old Vic Company in 1957.

She went on to play Ophelia in Hamlet, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, and Lady Macbeth in Macbeth over the course of the next few years. Dench’s work at this time was primarily in the theatre, but she also dabbled in film, winning a BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer. Her performance as Sally Bowles in the musical Cabaret in 1968 earned her rave acclaim.

Dench worked for the National Theatre Company and the Royal Shakespeare Company for the next two decades, establishing herself as one of the most famous British theatre actors. She garnered critical recognition for her work on television during this time period, starring in the shows A Fine Romance (1981–1984) and As Time Goes By (1992–2005).

Her film performances were few and far between, including supporting roles in important films like James Ivory’s A Room with a View (1985), before she gained to international renown as M in GoldenEye (1995), a role she proceeded to portray in eight James Bond films until her final cameo in Spectre (2015).

Dench was an eight-time Academy Award nominee, winning for her role as Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love (1998). She was also nominated for Mrs Brown (1997), Chocolat (2000), Iris (2001), Mrs Henderson Presents (2005), Notes on a Scandal (2006), Philomena (2013), and Belfast (2021).

She has also received a number of honorary accolades, including the BAFTA Fellowship Award, the Society of London Theatre Special Award, and the British Film Institute Fellowship Award, among others. On December 9, 1934, Judith Olivia Dench, the daughter of an Irish mother and an English father, was born in the Heworth neighbourhood of York.

Eleanora Olive (née Jones) was born in Dublin, and Reginald Arthur Dench MC & Bar (1897–1964) was a doctor from Dorset who grew up mostly in Dublin and served on the Western Front during World War I. Her parents met at Trinity College in Dublin, where they were both students.

Dench became a Quaker after attending York’s Mount School, a Quaker independent secondary school. She had two brothers, Peter (1928–2014) and Jeffery (1928–2014), both of whom were actors. Rebekah Elmaloglou and Sebastian Elmaloglou, two Greek-Australian actors, are her cousins. Emma Dench, her niece, is an ancient Rome historian.

Dench was featured on BBC One’s Who Do You Think You Are? in October 2021, where it was revealed that she is descended from the Bille family of Danish aristocrats, as well as Steen Andersen Bille (1624–1698), the illegitimate son of Anders Steensen Bille (da) (1578–1633), and Claus Bille (1490–1558), a grandfather of Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe .

Dench was familiar with the theatre because of her parents. Her father, a doctor, was the York Theatre Royal’s GP, and her mother, the wardrobe mistress.  Dench’s home was frequently visited by actors. Judi Dench participated in the first three productions of the modern revival of the York Mystery Plays in 1951, 1954, and 1957 on a non-professional basis during these years.

She played the Virgin Mary in the third production, which was staged in the Museum Gardens and included a fixed stage. Her brother Jeff attended the Central School of Speech and Theatre, and she grew interested in drama school.  Peggy Ashcroft’s portrayal of Cleopatra on stage also influenced her, and she subsequently stated that it “changed her life.”

She applied to the Central School, which was then based at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and where she was a classmate of Vanessa Redgrave, graduating with four acting honours, including the Gold Medal as Outstanding Student. Dench rapped alongside UK Grime MC Lethal Bizzle, according to the website LADBible, in September 2017.

The partnership came about because Bizzle’s lyrics and his apparel line Stay Dench, which Dench had previously helped promote, contain the slang term “dench,” which is used as a compliment. Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express, based on Agatha Christie’s 1934 novel of the same name, was Dench’s final picture of that year.

The mystery–drama ensemble picture follows Hercule Poirot, a world-famous detective who is tasked with solving a murder on the famous European train in the 1930s. With Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Penélope Cruz, Dench portrayed Princess Dragomiroff.

The film garnered mixed reviews from critics, with acclaim for the cast’s performances but criticism for not bringing anything new to prior adaptations. In Trevor Nunn’s spy drama film Red Joan, Dench plays the older version of the eponymous character Joan Elizabeth Stanley (2018).

It was inspired by the life of KGB intelligence source Melita Norwood, and based on Jennie Rooney’s novel of the same name. Despite the film’s poor reception, Dench’s performance was praised, with The Daily Telegraph noting that “Dench is wasted in this ridiculous interpretation.”

All Is True, a fictional historical drama in which she reunited with Kenneth Branagh to play William Shakespeare’s wife Anne Hathaway, was her other 2018 release. Critics praised the picture for being “impressively cast and gorgeously produced” after it was released to positive reviews.

Shakespeare’s dying days are depicted elegiacally in All Is True.”  In 2018, Dench co-starred in Roger Michell’s documentary film Nothing Like a Dame, alongside Eileen Atkins, Joan Plowright, and Maggie Smith, which records the actors’ chats, intermingled with scenes from their film and theatrical careers. It was hailed as a “outrageously humorous flick,” according to The Guardian.

Dench and her spouse flew across the island in 2019 to film Judi Dench’s Wild Borneo Adventure, a two-part nature documentary series for the ITV network, in which they looked at the island’s unique biodiversity and environmentalists’ efforts to conserve it for future generations.

She played Old Deuteronomy opposite Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, and James Corden in Tom Hooper’s cinematic adaptation of Cats in the fall of 2019. Critics panned the picture, labelling it one of the worst films of the year because of its CGI effects, narrative, and tone.

Also, despite a budget of up to $100 million, the picture was a box office disaster, grossing only $62 million to date.  Dench will be the oldest person to appear on the cover of British Vogue when it comes out in May 2020. Dench reunited with Kenneth Branagh in 2020 for Kenneth Branagh’s scientific fantasy adventure picture Artemis Fowl, based on Eoin Colfer’s debut novel of the same name.

The plot, dialogue, characters, and visual effects garnered mostly unfavourable reviews from critics.  She also starred in Andy Goddard’s war drama film Six Minutes to Midnight (2020) as a headmistress opposite Eddie Izzard, Carla Juri, and James D’Arcy, about a discovery at a school for Nazi elite girls that leads to a chain of fatal events.  Critics gave the film mixed reviews, describing it as a “fascinating fact-based WWII-era storey to tell” that “mostly loses it in convoluted spy hijinks.”

Dench’s third film in 2020 was Blithe Spirit, a comedy based on the 1941 play of the same name in which she starred as Madame Arcati, a talentless but quirky medium. Edward Hall directed it, and it received mixed reviews, with RogerEbert.com’s Sheila O’Malley calling it “aggressively un-funny.” Despite this, Dench was referred to as the film’s “one bright point.”

Dench had a brief appearance in Jules Williamson’s comedy drama Off the Rails, starring Kelly Preston, Jenny Seagrove, and Sally Phillips, in which she played three friends in their 50s who embark on a European rail excursion to commemorate the life of a recently deceased friend. The movie received a lot of bad feedback.

Belfast, a black-and-white coming-of-age comedy drama about a young boy’s boyhood in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in the 1960s, was her other feature that year.  The film received positive reviews and earned Dench her eighth Academy Award nomination after it premiered at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival.

Dench was cast in the film Allelujah, directed by Richard Eyre and starring Jennifer Saunders, Russell Tovey, David Bradley, and Derek Jacobi, in October 2021. Dench has lived in Outwood, Surrey, since she was a child.  In 2013, she remarked of her faith, “I think it impacts everything I do.” She has been a Quaker since she was in elementary school. […] “Without it, I’d be lost.”

She has been an honorary patron of Everton F.C.’s charity department since 2012. She is a long-time follower of Liverpool-based football club Everton F.C. Dench married Liverpool actor Michael Williams in 1971, and the two remained together until Williams’ death from lung cancer in 2001.

Finty Williams, the couple’s only child, was born in 1972 and went on to have a successful acting career. Dench has a grandchild, born in 1997, who she shares with her daughter. Since 2010, Dench has been dating David Mills, an environmentalist.

“I wasn’t even prepared to be ready for it,” she said in a 2014 interview with The New York Times magazine on how she never expected to discover love following her husband’s death. It was a long, slow process that required a great deal of maturity. “It’s fantastic.” Mills persuaded her to establish a squirrel enclosure at the wildlife centre he operates near her house in Surrey, and the two hit it off immediately.

Dench spoke about her macular degeneration in early 2012, saying that one eye was “dry” and the other was “wet,” and that she was treated with injections into the eye for it. She stated that she need someone to read to her scripts. In 2013, she had knee surgery as well, but said she recovered well and that her knee was no longer a problem.

Dench has been a vocal opponent of discrimination against older females in the movie industry. “I’m tired of hearing I’m too old to do something,” she said in 2014. I should be allowed to make my own decisions about whether or not I can perform certain tasks, rather than having someone warn me I’ll forget my lines or slip and fall on set.

An individual’s age is merely a numerical value. It’s something you’ve been forced to accept. When people ask, ‘Are you going to retire?’ that irritates me tremendously. ‘Isn’t it about time you sat down?’ Tell me age or something similar. Dench has campaigned in support of the San people of Botswana and the Arhuaco people of Colombia through Survival International, a non-governmental indigenous organisation.

She created a film in support of the San people, claiming that they are victims of tyranny, greed, and racism. Dench is also a patron of the Karuna Trust, a charity that helps India’s poorest and most oppressed people, primarily but not solely Dalits.

Dench was honoured by Nottingham Trent University with an honorary Doctor of Letters (DLitt) degree on July 22, 2010. Dench joined Joanna Lumley and David Shepherd as patrons of the Dr. Hadwen Trust on January 15, 2011, according to the trust’s website.

Dench was named honorary patron of Everton in the Community, the charitable arm of Liverpool-based football club Everton, of which she has long been a supporter, on March 19, 2012. Dench is a member of the American Shakespeare Center’s advisory board of directors. She is a patron of the Shakespeare Schools Festival, a nonprofit that gives schoolchildren in the United Kingdom the opportunity to play Shakespeare in professional theatres.

She’s also a supporter of Shakespeare North, a planned theatre in Prescot, near Liverpool, that will open in 2022.  She is a patron of East Park Riding for the Disabled in Newchapel, Surrey, which offers riding lessons to disabled youngsters.  Dench is also a vice-president of Revitalise, a national nonprofit that offers accessible vacations to people with impairments.

She publicly urged policymakers to adopt more progressive drug laws by decriminalising drug usage in 2011, alongside artist Sting and billionaire entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson. Dench was one of 200 celebrities who signed an open letter to the people of Scotland in 2014, urging them to vote to stay in the United Kingdom in the referendum that same year.
