Robert Zink was a professor of mathematics at Purdue University. Originally from Minneapolis, Zink attended Lake Harriet Elementary School and earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from the University of Minnesota. In 1953, he received his Ph.D., under the supervision of Bernard Russell Gelbaum, with a dissertation entitled Direct Unions of Measure Spaces. In 1971, he was unsuccessful in running for a council seat.
In 1953, Zink joined the Purdue faculty after a year in the military and a sabbatical at Wabash College and the University of California. At Purdue, he spends his entire career. In refereed journals, supervised six doctoral students, he published 32 articles. From this, he earned the Murphy Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching award in 1995. Laterally, he retired in the year of 1998, but he continued his profession of teaching without pay for almost seven years.
